African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness)

  • Causative agent – Trypanosoma brucei
  • Parasites are transmitted to human hosts by bitesof infected tsetse flies, which are found only in Africa.
  • East African trypanosomiasis – is also zoonotic infection with animal vectors.
  • Humans are infected following a fly bite, causing a skin chancre.
  • There are 500,000 persons currently infected (WHO).
  • Neurological complications are irreversible.
  • Serious social and economic consequences
  • Infections that threaten livestock are over 100 to 150 fold higher than the infections that cause human trypanosomiasis.
